The DataCloud interdepartmental laboratory stems from the need of DEIB researchers to optimize space, efforts and consumption in data analysis and machine learning activities, necessary for research projects in various scientific and application fields.
In the past, each research group worked on its own server but this solution, in addition to requiring a lot of space, did not allow for the sharing of computational capacities. Moreover, the servers aged prematurely, leading to increased consumption and lower efficiency. DataCloud has solved these problems, providing shared spaces in computer racks, located in a single server room and managed in cloud mode on a virtual machine.
This solution avoids having many different machines work in different locations and allows to use the available space rationally on dedicated servers, with the advantage of saving web space, computer racks and management resources.
The service, originally created for DEIB, has been extended to the entire University and thanks to the multidisciplinary work generated by this convergence of experts, DataCloud can generate important benefits for the researchers community at the Politecnico di Milano and outside.
